Iraqi House of Parliament - Baghdad

Given the significance of this building as the Iraqi house of parliament, the design had to reflect on the cultural and historical integrity of the country. The form of the building comprises three rings, each characterizing an era in Iraqi history. Symbolically each ring is engraved in a different language, Sumarian, Kurdish, and Arabic respectively. At the core lies the main structure housing the main assembly hall. An axis runs clearly through the complex oriented towards Mecca. Two identical towers are situated at the end of the axis symbolizing the gates of heaven. The complex is organized as a fortress and features mechanized steel louvers that shut, thus shielding the building in the case of any threat.
